QUT's ScratchThat Magazine

Max's final year of studies at Queensland University of Technology's Fine Arts program included working within the resident student-led arts magazine ScratchThat, publishing original works of writing, visual art, and music of all forms and genres, for and by emerging creatives based in Brisbane and beyond. Working in ScratchThat provided Max with his first taste of working within a creative project of professional standards and invaluable experience within a multidisciplinary creative environment.

Max worked within the Copyediting team for the Autumn Edition, helping correct and maintain pieces' mechanical quality to a professional standard. This time was his first operating within a team of editors, and Max learnt how to effectively work with other writers, editors, artists and creatives to produce and publish a collection of high-quality works. For the Spring Edition, Max took on the mantle of Head of Copyediting. This role offered him an opportunity to develop his leadership skills through the frameworks of creative writing and projects. Personally, Max's time in and contributions to ScratchThat Magazine developed his mechanical skills in editing, critiquing and providing feedback, as well as his interdisciplinary communication and teamwork skills, all helping to prepare him for his first steps and work in the industry.

My first published work

Below is Max's piece, The Breathless Man in Greenslopes, which was published in Labour, 2025's Spring Edition of ScratchThat's printed magazine, and his first original work to be published. Only his nana is more proud of him than he is.
